Azimuth Over Elevation Positioner (AOEP)

Lightweight Airborne Dual Axis Positioner for Aircraft and Helicopter Surveillance Missions

The Azimuth Over Elevation Positioner is a lightweight, compact dual-axis airborne positioner designed and supplied by System Controls for mounting in aircraft and helicopters for airborne and maritime surveillance. Delivering N x 360° continuous azimuth, -5° to +15° elevation, ±0.1° angular accuracy and azimuth speeds from 1°/sec to 180°/sec, the AOEP is driven by powerful BLDC motors with controlled programmable rotation and position.

About the Product

What is AOEP?

The Azimuth Over Elevation Positioner is a lightweight, compact airborne dual-axis positioner designed for mounting in aircraft and helicopters for airborne and maritime surveillance missions. Powerful BLDC motors through proper electronic circuits provide controlled, programmable rotation and position on both azimuth and elevation axes, with N x 360° continuous azimuth rotation and -5° to +15° elevation range. Angular accuracy of ±0.1° and orthogonal axis error less than 3 mrad ensure precise, stable payload direction throughout the surveillance mission.

01

MIL-STD-1553B Avionics Bus Integration

The AOEP supports MIL-STD-1553B, the standard military avionics data bus used in defence aircraft and helicopter platforms, alongside RS422 interface. This dual interface capability enables direct integration with airborne defence avionics systems without additional interface hardware, confirming the AOEP's qualification for real defence aircraft platform installation and operation.

02

Multilayer Safety Architecture for Airborne Reliability

Four independent safety layers are provided: limit switches for travel boundary control, emergency stop for immediate motion arrest, mechanically and electrically operated electromagnetic brakes for secure position hold and drive power cutoff for maintenance safety. This layered safety approach meets the reliability and safety requirements of airborne defence platform integration where failure consequences are severe.

03

High Speed Azimuth for Airborne Tracking

Azimuth speeds from 1°/sec to 180°/sec provide the rapid scan and slew rates needed for effective airborne surveillance and target tracking during aircraft and helicopter operations. Elevation speeds from 1°/sec to 90°/sec and N x 360° continuous azimuth rotation ensure comprehensive coverage across all azimuth angles and the elevation range required for airborne and maritime surveillance mission profiles.

04

Comprehensive Diagnostics for Field and Airborne Maintenance

The AOEP includes ON-LINE health monitoring, OFF-LINE fault testing, power-on self-test and desktop-based test software for stand-alone testing. This comprehensive diagnostics capability enables ground crew and maintenance teams to verify system health before flight, detect faults offline and validate performance through desktop testing without specialist airborne test equipment, reducing turnaround time and maintenance burden.
