Dual Axis Gimbal-Mounted Scanning System for Ground-Based Area Surveillance and Object Detection

The LIDAR Precision Scanning Assembly is a vehicle-mounted dual-axis gimbal system designed and supplied by System Controls for precision ground-based area scanning, object detection and 3D mapping at ranges from 100 metres to 5 kilometres. Carrying approximately 50 kg of electro-optical payload including an elliptical scanning mirror, CCD camera and IR camera on the elevation platform, it delivers 0.5 µrad scanning accuracy across a full 360-degree azimuth field of regard and minus 10 to plus 30 degrees in elevation. Compliant with JSS 55555 and MIL-STD-461C, it supports raster, circular and spiral scanning patterns across five configurable operational modes.

The LIDAR Precision Scanning Assembly is a dual-axis elevation over azimuth gimbal system mounted on a vehicle platform for precision ground-based area scanning. The azimuth axis sits on a sleeve ring driven by the azimuth drive system, while the elevation assembly is housed in a yoke structure originating from the azimuth segment of the pedestal.

The azimuth axis covers a full 0 to 360-degree field of regard with the elevation axis spanning minus 10 to plus 30 degrees, providing comprehensive area coverage for ground-based surveillance and detection missions. At operational ranges from 100 metres to 5 kilometres, the system delivers actionable data across both close-range perimeter monitoring and extended area reconnaissance scenarios.

Multi-Sensor Electro-Optical Payload Integration

The elevation platform carries an elliptical scanning mirror as the primary payload alongside a CCD camera and an IR camera, enabling simultaneous visible and infrared imaging during scanning operations. Camera frames are acquired through a frame grabber at fast rate and processed to identify required features of the object field, supporting both day and night surveillance missions.

Sub-Microradian Scanning Accuracy

Both azimuth and elevation axes deliver 0.5 µrad scanning accuracy with LOS jitter of 0.2 mrad, supported by two sets of servo sensors covering positional and rate feedback and two direct drives with zero backlash anti-backlash gears. This precision is essential for accurate object detection, feature identification and 3D mapping across the full operational range of the system.

Configurable Scanning Patterns and Operational Modes

Three scanning patterns, raster, circular and spiral, combined with five operational modes including search, detection, concentration measurement, home and slew, give operators complete flexibility to configure the system for specific mission profiles. Scanning rates are variable from 0.1 to 20 degrees per second on both axes, with GUI-commanded control for precise mission management.
