The LPS Laser Pointing System is a compact, precision two-axis pedestal designed and supplied by System Controls for pointing and aiming high power laser beams onto targets with microradian-level accuracy. Integrating the Beam Delivery System, Laser Aiming Devices and Target Viewing System on a single platform, the LPS delivers better than 50 µrad pointing accuracy and 30 µrad resolution on both azimuth and elevation axes, driven by zero backlash geared BLDC motors with optical angle encoders under closed loop position control.

What is the
Laser Pointing System?

The LPS Laser Pointing System is a two-axis pedestal platform designed to point and aim high power laser beams onto targets with precision and stability in field surveillance and laser application deployments. The complete laser module, including the Beam Delivery System, Laser Aiming Devices and Target Viewing System, mounts on the LPS for carrying out field surveillance and pointing and focusing of the high power laser. The platform consists of two rotational drive systems, elevation and azimuth, mutually perpendicular to each other, each driven by a zero backlash geared BLDC motor.

Sub-50 Microradian Pointing Accuracy

The LPS delivers pointing accuracy better than 50 µrad with 30 µrad resolution on both azimuth and elevation axes under closed loop position control. This microradian-level precision is essential for the accurate and stable direction of high power laser energy onto targets at operational field ranges, where even small angular errors translate to significant displacement of the laser beam at distance.

Compact and Lightweight for Tripod-Mounted Field

Use At a pedestal weight of 5 kg or less and dimensions of 280mm x 170mm x 295mm, the LPS is a compact, lightweight platform well suited to tripod-mounted field deployment. The bottom surface mounts directly to the top plate of a heavy duty tripod, available as per customer requirement, enabling rapid setup and repositioning across field surveillance and laser application deployment scenarios.

Zero Backlash BLDC Drive for Stable, Repeatable Positioning

Each axis is driven by a zero backlash geared BLDC motor with an optical angle encoder providing position and velocity feedback to the servo amplifier. The high efficiency, backlash-free precision gear mechanism delivers the required torque in a compact assembly, ensuring that commanded positions are achieved accurately and held stably without mechanical play affecting beam direction.

Integrated Multi-Component Laser System Platform

The LPS provides a unified mounting platform for the complete laser module assembly including the Beam Delivery System, Laser Aiming Devices and Target Viewing System, all integrated through a custom-built BDOC adapter on the top surface. This integrated architecture eliminates inter-component alignment errors and ensures the entire optical and laser assembly moves as a single, precisely controlled unit.
