Rotary Joints & Slip Rings for Defence, Radar and Aerospace Applications

Rotary joints and slip rings are critical electromechanical interface components that enable continuous transmission of RF signals, fluid media and electrical power across rotating interfaces in radar, defence and aerospace systems. System Controls offers a complete range including Waveguide Twists, Waveguide Rotary Joints, Fluid Rotary Joints and Slip Rings, engineered for integration into radar antennas, surveillance systems and aerospace platforms and backed by 35+ years of defence domain expertise.

Surveillance Positioners

A rotary joint is a mechanical or electromechanical component that maintains continuous transmission of RF signals or fluid media between stationary and rotating parts of a system. System Controls offers Waveguide Twists, Waveguide Rotary Joints in low band and mid band configurations, and a Fluid Rotary Joint for radar antenna cooling applications.

A slip ring is an electromechanical device that transmits electrical power and signals from a stationary structure to a rotating one, used in any system requiring continuous electrical connectivity across a rotating interface. System Controls offers slip rings in 18 channel and 30 channel configurations for radar, aerospace, robotics and defence control system applications.

A waveguide rotary joint provides a continuous microwave transmission path between stationary and rotating sections of a radar or antenna system. It is used in primary surveillance radars, IFF systems, airborne radar and naval antenna platforms where uninterrupted RF signal continuity across a rotating interface is required.

Low band waveguide rotary joints operate at lower microwave frequencies, suited for long-range ground-based surveillance radars and IFF systems. Mid band variants operate at intermediate frequencies for airborne radar, naval tracking and medium-range surveillance applications.

A waveguide twist rotates the polarization of a microwave signal by 90 degrees without changing its propagation direction. It is used where spatial or structural constraints within a radar or RF system require a change in waveguide orientation while maintaining signal integrity and minimal insertion loss.

Fluid rotary joints transfer cooling media from a stationary supply to a rotating radar antenna assembly. System Controls' Fluid Rotary Joint handles ethylene glycol water mixture at up to 5 Bar pressure and 10 LPM flow rate for radar antenna thermal management during high-power continuous operation.

A slip ring transmits electrical power and low-frequency signals across a rotating interface. A waveguide rotary joint transmits high-frequency microwave RF signals. In radar systems, both are typically used together within the same rotating assembly alongside a fluid rotary joint for cooling.

System Controls offers slip rings in 18 channel and 30 channel configurations. The 30 Channel Slip Ring supports up to 60 rpm, IP 40 protection per IEC 529 and operates from -30°C to +55°C for radar, aerospace and defence control system integration.
